Feeling grounded at home is a must, but city living doesn’t always make that easy and accessible. Recently, after returning home from a trip to beautiful and GREEN Austin, TX, I thought to myself ‘what can I do to feel more grounded in this space?’
Surround yourself with nature. I went to a local plant shop {Little Leaf}, took my existing house plant babies with me to be repotted, got a lesson on how to keep them thriving, and invested in some new beauties to bring home with me. For a good laugh, imagine a 27-year-old girl trying to carry a giant birds of paradise up to her apartment alone dripping in sweat with curse words and laughter happening simultaneously. Yep, that girl was me. Fast forward to now and I wake up and walk out of my bedroom only to be greeted by green happiness. How cool is that?! Our souls long for connection to nature, so go get yourself some house plants!
We’re not meant to be out in the open all of the time. We’re on the 7th floor and two out of our four walls are windows. While this might seem appealing to some, staring out at a concrete jungle sometimes has me feeling like I’m living in a fishbowl. I closed one wall of blinds and it’s amazing the difference it made. I feel safer, calmer, and like I have so much more privacy to simple be!
I could go on and on about this one, but essentially, decluttering your space declutters your mind, which allows space for feeling grounded. Take a day to go through your belongings one room at a time — every drawer, nook, and cranny. Keep what makes you genuinely happy and get rid of things that are just taking up space. For clothes — have you worn it in a year? If not, get rid! For products — have you used it in 6 months? If not, get rid! Simplifying your space will simplify your life. Trust me.
Organizing what’s left after getting rid of unnecessary stuff is just as important as getting rid of the stuff in the first place. Lucky for me, I love organizing, but if you don’t, don’t worry! Organizing can be really easy. I love to repurpose jars from sauerkraut or other store-bought food items to hold cabinet items like floss sticks or hair clips. Drawer dividers can be purchased at The Container Store or Target to transform your “junk drawers” into purposeful storage. For clothes, I like to keep the most seasonally relevant items easy to get to and store the others in bins under the bed if I’m short on space!
Clean. Your. Space. Good things come when we clear out the old and create space for the new. This goes for dirt and that pile of laundry you’ve been meaning to get to, too! IMPORTANT: Be sure to use nontoxic household cleaning products free of endocrine disruptors aka harmful chemicals that wreck our hormones. My favorite inexpensive combo is a homemade mixture of water, white vinegar, and orange essential oil!
How do you want to feel in the space you spend most of your time in? For me, grounded, happy, and calm come to mind. The energy of your home impacts the energy of you. May these 5 simple ways to feel more grounded at home leave you feeling just that.
